Arizona Chapter Resident Travel Fellowship

The Arizona Chapter of the American Academy of Optometry is pleased to offer one educational travel fellowship in the amount of $750 to attend Academy 2023 New Orleans. All 2023-24 residents in an accredited residency program located in the State of Arizona are encouraged to apply. Interested residents must complete the application form found on the Chapter’s website. The application should be emailed to the Arizona Chapter (arizona.aaopt@gmail.com) along with proof of registration to the Academy Annual Meeting by August 28, 2023. The name of the recipient will be announced at the Arizona Chapter’s Fall Meeting. All residents are encouraged to attend the meeting; however, attendance is not required to receive the travel fellowship.

It is the standard policy of the Academy that recipients who receive a travel stipend to attend an event, cannot receive a second or duplicate travel stipend for the same event, from the Academy or its affiliates.

Annual Business and Spring Meeting – March 11th

The Arizona Chapter held its annual business meeting in conjunction with its Spring Meeting. To view the full schedule of events, education sessions, speakers, and more, download the Spring Meeting Brochure.

Bylaws changes were approved, including a change in the officer terms from one-year to two-years. Please view the updated Arizona Chapter bylaws HERE. Additionally, new officers were elected.

We would also like to thank the Glaucoma Section and their Speakers Bureau for sponsoring the keynote speaker, Dr. Austin Lifferth, at our Spring Meeting!

Recap

The tenth annual Spring Meeting of the Arizona Chapter of the American Academy of Optometry was held on Saturday, March 11, 2023 at Midwestern University. There were 48 optometrists and students in attendance at the 6 hour CE event.

The diverse CE program featured our Keynote Speaker, Dr. Austin Lifferth, who presented a 2-hour lecture entitled Keys to Preserving Vision in Glaucoma and a 2-hour lecture entitled Glaucoma and Ocular Surface Disease – Frenemies for Life. Dr. Tammy Than presented a 1-hour CE lecture entitled When Good Drugs Go Bad: Ocular Adverse Drug Reactions.

The program concluded with 1-hour of Grand Rounds CE featuring Dr. Sydni Davis Farhat, who presented a case on stable vision and new CNVM, and Dr. Jenny La, who presented a case of hypotony and choroidal detachment.

The business meeting was held in conjunction with the Spring Meeting where five new 2022 Arizona Fellows were recognized, and new officers were elected. Congratulations to the new officers!
