Annual Symposium – The Optometrist’s Emerging Role in the Lyme Epidemic
Friday, October 28, 2022, 2:30 to 4:30 PM
Lyme disease has been a growing epidemic in the continental United States, and Optometrists have an opportunity to play a more significant role in its diagnosis. Lyme’s ocular symptoms include not only the common uveitis, but can affect visual acuity, motility, and visual-cognitive processes. This symposium will look at the disease itself, it’s ocular manifestations, as well as diagnosis and treatment. Dr Winter-Rundell will lecture on Lyme basics, including subjective symptoms of the disease and an overview of available testing. Dr William Padula will discuss the objective signs for optometrists, including visual processing dysfunction, VEP changes, and peripapillar ischemic halos in the posterior pole. And finally, Naturopath Dr Nicola Ducharme will discuss Lyme recovery including detox, inflammatory control, and long term nutrition maintenance.
